Custom Aluminum Fuel Tank Guide Lines

The United States Coast Guard has specific guide lines for fuel tanks that we follow.  We fabricate our tanks with marine grade aluminum that is 5053 H32 alloy.  We fabricate fuel tanks with 1/8″, 3/16″, or 1/4″ aluminum plate.  Our fuel tanks include baffles at most 30″ apart to keep fuel from splashing around.  Our aluminum fuel tanks come standard with a 1.5″ fill and .625″ vent.  Sending units vary from tank to tank, but we do include them.

Fuel Tanks can be square, rectangular or v-bottom shaped.  We have a CNC press brake that is capable of bending the aluminum plate up to 90 degrees.  Tanks that have as bends in the corners is always better than welding to ends together.  We typically bend the belly of the tank out of one big piece.  Then we attach 2 ends on the tank.  We weld the lid to the tank sides and plug weld the baffles.  The internal baffles have notches that eliminate air pockets within the corners.  The tanks have mounting brackets welded on.   Tanks with mounting brackets are mounted to the boat securely.

TIG and MIG Welding

We either TIG weld or MIG weld the tanks.  We MIG weld the insides of the tank to increase speed and TIG weld the fittings of the tank to increase accuracy.  Customers can pay extra to have their fuel tanks coated with bed liner material for durability.  Fuel Tanks are certainly pressure test the tank to make sure that there aren’t any leaks.
